Cockroaches

What are cockroaches?

Cockroaches are scavenging insects. They play a vital role in the ecosystem by helping to get rid of decaying plant and animal matter and acting as a food source for many predators. They are also some of the most familiar and unwelcome household pests that find their way into our McAllen, Texas homes and businesses.

Two of the most common cockroach species to invade our structures are the German cockroach and the American cockroach.

American cockroaches are large species with a brownish-red color and yellowish band outlining the back of the head. They are the largest cockroaches in the U.S. that regularly invade our structures.

German cockroaches are fast-moving and have adapted to living inside our homes and businesses. German cockroaches are small with a light brown body and two darker horizontal black stripes behind their heads. Contact us today to learn more about our German cockroach control services.

Are cockroaches dangerous?

Cockroaches are unwanted in our homes because of the dangers they bring with them.

Cockroaches live in unsanitary places; they spend their days crawling through garbage, sewers, drains, and other organic matter. Their bodies and legs come into contact with pathogens and bacteria that cause gastrointestinal problems and other illnesses. Cockroaches are also well-known for spreading allergens through their feces and shed skins that can trigger asthma attacks.

When cockroaches get into our homes, we need to worry about more than just the health risks they pose. They also contaminate food, stain surfaces with their excrement, and chew holes in things like clothing, upholstered furniture, and papers.

Why do I have a cockroach problem?

Cockroaches have been around for eons; their adaptability and resourcefulness have allowed them to survive the test of time. If your home offers them what they need (moisture, warmth, and food), they will find a way inside.

American cockroaches usually move indoors from our outdoor spaces through spaces under exterior doors, torn screens, vents, drains, and openings they find around pipes and other utilities entering your home.

German cockroaches live their lives inside our structures. In multi-unit buildings, they move from unit to unit through cracks in walls, vents, or gaps under doors. However, the most common way these pests move from place to place is by hitchhiking. They crawl into boxes, appliances, pieces of furniture, and other personal items and are transported wherever we take them.

Where will I find cockroaches?

Cockroaches excel at the game of hide and seek. When cockroaches first find a way into our homes, they make quick work of finding dark cracks and crevices to hide in during the day. At night they emerge to forage for food.

Knowing where cockroaches like to hide is important so we can regularly inspect those areas and eliminate these pests as quickly as possible. Places roaches hide include:

  • Electrical outlets
  • Wall voids
  • The backs of cabinets and drawers
  • Within pieces of upholstered furniture
  • Boxes and other storage containers
  • Spaces under refrigerators or stoves

How can I prevent cockroaches in the future?

In addition to implementing professional home pest control services, the following five tips will help you make your property less attractive to the cockroaches that live throughout Texas.

  1. Most cockroaches are attracted to moisture. Reduce moisture in your home by repairing leaky pipes, ensuring proper ventilation, and using dehumidifiers.
  2. Take away their access to food in your home by storing food in the fridge or containers with airtight lids. Each evening pick up any food your pets have not eaten.
  3. Avoid food odors attracting cockroaches to your yard. Keep lids on trash cans and compost bins, keep outdoor eating areas free of leftover food, and avoid feeding pets outside.
  4. Maintain a clean kitchen. Regularly wash dishes, sweep the floor, and wipe down counters.
  5. Stop cockroaches from easily finding a way into your home. Seal spaces in your home’s exterior where cockroaches can get in and always inspect second-hand items or deliveries for cockroaches before bringing them inside.
