Spiders

What are spiders?

Spiders are arachnids and related to ticks, mites, and scorpions. They are eco-important predators that help reduce nuisance insects throughout Texas, and anywhere else they call home. Unfortunately for us, they often make our properties into their homes. Like rodents and ants, spiders are common household pests and can find their way onto any property that offers them shelter and access to insect prey.

Are spiders dangerous?

In our area of Texas, the black widow spider is the species that is the most dangerous to people. They are shiny black spiders with an identifying reddish hourglass marking on the underside of the abdomen. If a black widow spider were to bite a person, they have venom powerful enough to attack the nervous system and cause symptoms that require medical attention.

Fourtuneltly most spiders in our area, like jumping spiders, daddy long legs, and wolf spiders, are harmless to people.

Though nuisance spiders may not have venom strong enough to harm a person, that doesn’t mean we should allow them to have free reign of our yards and homes. The presence of spiders in large numbers is a strong indicator of an overall pest problem on your property that you need to address.

Why do I have a spider problem?

Spiders hunt other living creatures — mainly insects and other spiders. Like any other predator, spiders only live successfully in places with food for them to eat.

Things in our yards that attract insects and then the hungry spiders that like to hunt them include:

  • Dense landscaping and tall grass
  • Trees
  • Gardens
  • Flowerbed
  • Open trash cans and compost bins
  • Standing water

Where will I find spiders?

Spiders are naturally shy and reclusive. They prefer to live in dark, quiet areas. Places we regularly find spiders include:

  • Areas of dense vegetation
  • Woodpiles, rock piles, and brush piles
  • Trees, tall grass, and weeds
  • Outdoor light fixtures
  • Roof eaves
  • Decks and porch steps
  • Shutters and siding

Spiders usually prefer to live outside, but we often see them in our homes after following their insect prey indoors. Once inside, if they discover that our homes offer them a comfortable place to take shelter and insects to fill their bellies, they will stay until the food runs out or they are forced to leave.
