Wildlife

What is wildlife?

Wildlife are wild animals and a constant presence in most of our lives, whether you live smack in the middle of a city or a more rural setting.

Wildlife live outside and without the help of people. However, as wild animals have had to live closer to people because we have taken over much of their domain, they have learned that we will provide them with their basic needs of food, water, and shelter. Though wild animals may not mind living with us, the feeling isn’t mutual.

In the Rio Grande Valley, some of the most common wild animals to try to move to our properties include:

  • Birds
  • Opossums
  • Raccoons
  • Skunks
  • Snakes
  • Squirrels

Is wildlife dangerous?

No matter the size or species, wild animals have the potential to be dangerous when living on your property.

  • They can dig holes in your yard, causing unsightly trip hazards.
  • Wild animals will tear through gardens, trash cans, and compost piles.
  • They can cause damage to the exterior and interior of your home.
  • Wild animals will protect themselves when cornered or they feel threatened by biting or scratching.

Health hazards are also a major concern when wildlife is present. Many wild animals carry and transmit diseases and bacteria on their bodies and in their urine, saliva, and feces. Skunks and raccoons are common carriers of rabies.

Why do I have a wildlife problem?

Wild animals are attracted to food and places that will shelter them from the elements and predators. Unfortunately for us, our yards and homes provide many wild animals living throughout Texas with all those things.

Wildlife is most attracted to properties that offer them multiple sources of food. Open trash cans, compost piles, gardens, fruit trees, bird feeders, outdoor cooking or eating areas, and pet feeding stations are examples of things that attract wild animals to our yards.

For predatory animals like snakes, if your yard is home to rodents and other prey, they will be more than happy to make themselves at home on your property.

Where will I find wildlife?

Where wild animals prefer to live depends greatly on their species. But in most cases, wild animals create their nests or burrowing sites in places that provide them with protection. Some will burrow right into the ground, while others burrow under things like woodpiles, shrubs, or piles of yard debris. Birds, squirrels, and other wildlife usually take cover in above-ground locations and prefer to live in trees.

When wild animals decide to move into our homes, they seek out dark, quiet places to nest. Attics, chimneys, and wall voids are the most popular indoor hangouts for wild animals.

How can I prevent wildlife in the future?

To help prevent wildlife from taking over your Texas property, we are going to provide you with our top five easy-to-execute wildlife prevention tips.

  1. Limit their access to water on your property by making sure gutters are clear, filling in areas that puddle with rainwater, and storing items like buckets that collect water upside down when not in use.
  2. Reduce their access to food sources by fencing in gardens, picking up uneaten pet food, and removing bird feeders.
  3. Never leave garbage out in the open for long periods. Always place trash bags in trash bins with secure lids. Make sure trash is removed from your property each week.
  4. Make your outdoor space less attractive to wildlife by keeping the grass cut short, removing yard debris, and not stacking wood close to your home’s exterior.
  5. Keep wild animals from gaining access to your home by sealing holes along the roof, replacing damaged screens, and putting appropriate covers over chimneys and vents.
